Announcements

Pre-Jamboree Training Experience

Who: All Mecklenburg County Council Jamboree Contingent participants, Scouts and adult leaders, plus Jamboree Committee members who serve as staff support.

When: Fri., June 11, to Sun., June 13, 2010.

Where: Belk Scout Camp

What: This is the required pre-Jamboree training that is one of the attendance qualifications. It is a critically important event. Details will be provided by the leadership of each Jamboree troop.

Centennial Outdoor Expo

Who: All Mecklenburg County Council Jamboree Contingent troops are among the special guests.

When: Sat., Apr. 17, 2010.

Where: UNC-Charlotte

What: This is a BSA 100th anniversary Outdoor Expo. Jamboree troops are invited to attend and erect their Jamboree gateways. Details will be provided by the leadership of each Jamboree troop.

Selection Interviews for Contingent Troop Applicants who have Completed the Application Process: Youth Contingent Troop Participant selection interviews are scheduled prior to Scouts being assigned to a contingent troop. More will be scheduled as needed for selection of additional Scouts from the waiting list.; All contingent troop applicants, youth and adult, should insure they have completed the application process.
Online application confirmations should be printed, taken to your Scoutmaster for his approval signature, and be turned in to the Council Service Center with a $100 deposit.; Following the interview process, you will be notified if you are selected. If you are not selected, you will have the option to be placed on the waiting list.
Contingent Troop Participant Selection: Positions have been offered to 180 Youth Contingent Troop Participants. On time payment of fees is expected in order to hold your position.; Adult Troop Leader participant positions have been assigned to five Scoutmasters, 1st Asst. Scoutmasters, 2nd Asst. Scoutmasters, and 3rd Asst. Scoutmasters.; A Waiting List is being maintained for youth participants in the order of the date their application process was completed - that is, the SM-signed application and $100 deposit has been turned in at the Council Service Center. Payment Schedule & Policies for Contingent Troop Youth Participants and Adult Leaders

Payment invoices and reminders are not sent out. It is each applicants responsibility to follow the schedule and make payments on time to retain your place in the contingent.
If you become late in making payments, your place will be offered to the next person on the waiting list.
Payments should be made by check payable to "Mecklenburg County Council, BSA" and taken or mailed to 1410 East Seventh St, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Scouts:

$100 deposit due when application turned in to Council Service Center
$200 due upon being notified of your selection following the interview process, and by 04/01/09, for a total paid to date of $300
$200 due 06/01/09, for a total paid to date of $500
$200 due 09/01/09, for a total paid to date of $700
$200 due 11/01/09, for a total paid to date of $900
$200 due 02/01/10, for a total paid to date of $1,100
$250 due 04/01/10, for a total fee of $1,350

Adults - SM, ASM1, & ASM2:

$100 deposit due when application turned in to Council Service Center
$100 due upon being notified of your selection following the interview process, and by 04/01/09, for a total paid to date of $200
$100 due 06/01/09, for a total paid to date of $300
$100 due 09/01/09, for a total paid to date of $400
$100 due 11/01/09, for a total fee of $500

Adults - ASM3:

$100 deposit due when application turned in to Council Service Center
$100 due upon being notified of your selection following the interview process, and by 11/01/09, for a total paid to date of $200

$150 due 04/01/10, for a total paid to date of $500

If placed on the waiting listed:

If you wish to remain on the waiting list for possible future selection, your $100 deposit will be retained. If and when selected, all catch-up payments will be due within 30 days.

If you wish to drop out:

You must send a drop out request in writing to Council Service Center.
- If you are placed on the waiting list but so not wish to remain for possible future selection, all payments made to date will be refunded.
- If you are selected but wish to drop out, refunds can only be made if another person takes your place.

2010 Jamboree - Get Signed Up Today!

Sign up as soon as possible to secure a high place on the waiting list which is being kept on a first-come, first-serve basis. Mecklenburg County Council plans to send 180 Scouts and 20 Adult Leaders in five provisional troops as part of the council contingent. Each troop is allocated slots for 36 Scouts in 4 patrols of 8 Scouts each, 4 Scouts in troop leadership positions, and 4 Adult Leaders.

To sign up, Scout or adult applicant, do the following:

Register online at MyScouting.org. Go to this Web address and create a User Account, if you do not already have one. Jamboree youth registration must be completed by a parent or guardian from the parent or guardian's MyScouting account. Do not enter the youth's BSA Member ID into the MyScouting User Account profile. After creating a log-in User ID and Password, you will receive an email confirmation.
After creating a User Account and loggin into your My Scouting account, select Event Reservations, next select Jamboree, then select the appropriate category. To create a Scout application, select Youth Participant. To create an troop leader application, select Adult Troop Leader. To apply for Jamboree Staff, select Staff. You then must have and use the BSA Member ID number of the applicant to complete the application. You must also use the Council Number 415. The BSA Member ID number can be found on the BSA membership card, or if not available, check with the Scoutmaster or call the Mecklenburg County Council Service Center. You will be asked to pay a non-refundable $10 processing fee, payable by credit/debit card only. Then enter all the data required to complete the online application and submit.
After submitting the online application, all contingent troop applicants, youth participants AND adult troop leaders, must complete the application process by printing the online confirmation, having it signed by your Scoutmaster, and taking it with a $100 deposit to the Mecklenburg County Council Service Center at 1410 East Seventh Street.
The full cost (including the initial $100 deposit) for Scout participants to go in one of the four provisional troops as part of the council contingent is $1,350, and the balance amount will be collected in installments during 2009 and 2010. This cost includes Jamboree fees, group equipment, travel to and from the Jamboree site, all meals on the trip, and the pre-Jamboree planning and training experience.

To qualify for attendance as a Scout youth participant, a Scout must:

Be approved by his Scoutmaster.
Be at least 12 years old or have completed the sixth grade by July 1, 2010.
Be First Class rank by July 1, 2010.
Not have his 18th birthday before Aug. 3, 2010.
Participate in the pre-Jamboree training, a weekend event to be scheduled in the spring of 2010.
File a personal health and medical record form before the training event.
Be active in his troop for at least six monthes prior to July 1, 2010.

Location and Site

Fort A. P. Hill, located in the rolling hills of Caroline County, Virginia, near the towns of Fredericksburg and Bowling Green is an ideal facility to hold this major national Scout jamboree.

This 76,000-acre U.S. Army facility has served as the permanent site for the national Scout jamboree since 1981. The Boy Scouts of America uses approximately 3,000 acres of land to support a city of more than 40,000 Scouts and leaders.

Jamboree Program

Program features reflect the skills of Scouting, our national heritage, physical fitness, environmental conservation, and the true spirit of Scouting.

Daily activities include archery, bikathlon, buckskin games, confidence course, conservation programs, scuba, kayak fun, racing shell run, and raft encounters.

Regional action centers with rappelling towers are truly popular, as are trap shooting, an American Indian village, and the opening and closing arena shows, not to mention daily stage shows and many other activities. It's Scouting and American history at their very best!

Jamboree City

The 2010 National Scout Jamboree will attract thousands of Scouts and leaders, and while it won't be the biggest city in Virginia, it will be the fastest growing on your day of arrival—July 26, 2010! Imagine 17,000 tents and 3,500 patrol kitchens popping up in a matter of hours.

Amid the thousands of colorful tents that will house participants and provide program and support services, there is an infrastructure that provides a safe and secure environment at Fort A. P. Hill. Everything from bus and telephone systems to a hospital and first-aid stations, police and fire departments, post offices, food warehouses, a daily newspaper, and retail stores (trading posts) provide all the support and program services needed for an outstanding event.

Jamboree History

Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, created the idea of holding a large encampment of Scouts and leaders to celebrate Scouting in England. He called it a jamboree.

Since 1937, the Boy Scouts of America has held a national Scout jamboree for Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout councils throughout the United States. More than 650,000 Scouts and leaders have hiked the trails, paths, and roadways since the first jamboree was held at the base of the Washington Monument on the Mall in our nation's capital.

Since that time, 16 national Scout jamborees have been held. Three were held in the western United States at Irvine Ranch, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Farragut State Park in Idaho. Five have been held in Pennsylvania at Valley Forge and Moraine State Park. Beginning in 1981, Caroline County, Virginia, and Fort A. P. Hill have been the permanent site.

Currently there are many Scout applicants and a selection process is underway.

Troop 116: Troop 116 has a number of Scouts who have applied as council contingent troop members. It is imperative that each Scout who has applied or may be interested follows the registration and selection procedures.
